Essential Gear for Safe & Effective Cheerleading Training
Whether you're training at home or in the gym, having the right equipment ensures safe practice and helps you progress faster. This guide covers everything you need for each skill category on HQCheer.
These items are required or strongly recommended for all HQCheer athletes, regardless of skill level or category.
Proper cheer shoes provide ankle support, grip, and lightweight flexibility. Required for stunts and tumbling. Avoid running shoes or bare feet.
A folding panel mat (minimum 4'x8'x2") for home tumbling practice. Essential for safety when training standing back handsprings and above.
Form-fitting athletic wear that allows full range of motion. Avoid loose clothing that can catch on equipment or obstruct spotter grip.
Hair must be secured away from the face. Remove all jewelry, watches, and accessories before practice to prevent injury.
Panel mats, incline mats (cheese mats), air track or spring floor access, and a pit or resi mat for advanced skills. A spotter is required for all skills Level 3 and above.
Flat grass or spring floor surface, ankle braces (optional but recommended for flyers), and proper cheer shoes for all positions. Minimum 4 people required for group stunts.
Spring floor or thick landing mats, minimum 4 trained participants, and a coach or experienced spotter present. Never practice baskets on hard surfaces.
Flat surface with shock absorption (gym floor, turf, or mat). Resistance bands for conditioning. Jump training can be done individually with minimal equipment.
Spring floor or thick crash mats, full team with trained spotters at every position, and a certified coach supervising. Pyramids should never be attempted without proper safety personnel.
Many HQCheer athletes practice at home between gym sessions. Here's a recommended home setup:
Panel mat (4'x8'), clear space (10'x10' minimum), proper shoes, and a phone/camera for video submission.
Panel mat + incline mat, air track (10-16ft), tripod for filming, resistance bands, and a full-length mirror for form checks.
Spring strip or air track (20ft+), resi mat or landing pit access, balance beam, and dedicated training space with ceiling clearance (9ft minimum).
Safety is non-negotiable at HQCheer. The following safety equipment should always be available during practice:
Crash mats for landing zones, first aid kit with ice packs and tape, a charged phone for emergencies, and access to water for hydration. For stunts and pyramids, ensure all spotters are trained and positioned before attempting any skill.
